Many members of A.A. believe that their Higher Power (or God) is found in the stillness – in the quiet. Most first-time meditators find it strange to sit in silence, to sit with their innermost thoughts and feelings, to sit and do nothing — the very thing that, oddly enough, the mind tends to resist. Our entire existence is experienced through our minds, and our perspective on life can dramatically alter once we begin meditating.
The process of meditating is straightforward and easy: simply get still, get quiet, and practice. All you have to do is close your eyes, stay focused on your breathing. This is the one skill where you don’t have to strive to achieve something — just a place of stillness where no effort is required.
At the request of another member of A.A. and a visitor of this site, I created a “GUIDED AUDIO MEDITATION FOR MEMBERS OF A.A.” and added it to Step 11 (about halfway down the page). Meditation has always been an interesting challenge for me to get my mind quiet enough. I hope this guided meditation will help you get quiet, get centered and listen for the direction of YOUR Higher Power.
